HARLEM, NEW YORK:
Harlem became an African-American community in the early 1900s.
By the 1920s, Harlem's economy was booming. Stores and shops opened. People had money. People were happy. And women and children were safe to walk the streets.
But by the 1950s, however, something happened in the life of Harlem. That was because heroin came to town. And when heroin came to town, all things changed.
Today, Harlem is a drug-infested city and drug lords and lawless gangs are everywhere they want to be. Drug addicts comb the streets in search of a man on the corner to ease their pain. Women and children are no longer safe outside their homes because of fear.
DETROIT, MICHIGAN:
In the 1950s, Detroit was the hood ornament of the automotive industry worldwide. No town in the world produced more cars and trucks and made them better than Detroit. People flocked to the city for jobs that paid higher than average wages. The economy was booming. People built houses, planted grass, and added picket fences. People had money. People were happy. And women and children were safe to walk the streets.
But something happened in the life of Detroit, Michigan. That was because heroin came to town. And when heroin came to town, all things changed.
Today, Detroit is a drug-infested city. Drug lords and unlawful gangs are everywhere they want to be. Drug addicts comb the streets in search of a man on the corner to ease their pain. Women and children are no longer safe outside their homes because of fear.
SODOM and GOMORRAH:
"Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven: and he overthrew those cities, and that which grew upon the ground" and "the smoke of the country went up as the smoke of a furnace." (Genesis 29: 24, 25, 28)
AMERICA'S BURDEN:
What shall we say to these things when America's cities are shackled in fear and trouble and when America's cites are all falling down?
Will God rain down on cities across America the way He rained down on Sodom and Gomorrah?
"Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people." (Proverbs 14: 34)
The United States has been an exalted nation. But what will our future be?
