Bobby Jones is one of the greatest golfers
to ever play the game.
Born in Atlanta, Georgia, he never declared himself to be a professional golfer, choosing instead to remain an amateur, which means he collected the trophies he won, but never the money. He retired from the game at age 28 and opened a law practice in Atlanta.
Not only is Bobby remembered for being a great golfer, but, more than this, he is also remembered for his honesty on golf courses.
In two tournaments, he touched the ball with his club before striking it, which is a violation of the rules.
In both tournaments, none of the officials saw what he did, and neither did any of the players or fans. Only Bobby saw what he did and that was enough for him to call the course marshals to his position to explain what he had done. The officials told him that they didn't see his mistakes, but if you said you did it, they told him, then we will take your word for it, and penalties were assessed.
In both tournaments, Bobby lost by a single stroke. He was willing to lose by being honest, rather than taking the wins by cheating.
How many golfers will do as Bobby Jones did?
Perhaps not many.
How many people in life will admit their faults to others even though others do not see their faults?
Perhaps not many.
Going further, how many people will admit that they are sinners to God?
Perhaps not many.
Out of seven billion people on earth today, Christians are but a remnant, or perhaps the smallest body of people of any institution in the world. But we would rather be honest with our Lord and win, rather than lose and go to hell for trying to cheat God.
"Run ye to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem, and see now, and know, and seek in the broad places thereof, if ye can find a man, if there be any that executeth judgment, that seeketh the truth, and I will pardon it." (Jeremiah 5: 1)
"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us." (1st John 1: 9-10)
ENDNOTES:
From 1923 to 1930, Bobby Jones won 13 Major championships, including 5 U.S. Amateurs, 4 U.S. Opens, and 1 British Amateur. In 1930, he won all four major titles for the "Grand Slam" of golf. After retiring from golf, he wrote 11 books about golf and made 18 instructional golf films. He was the founder and helped design the Augusta National Golf Club where the Masters is played every year. He was educated at Emory University, Emory University School of Law, Harvard University, and Georgia Institute of Technology.
