Jesus Christ is known more than any person in all of human history.
Each year on His birthday, Christmas trees and lights throughout the world are turned on, and no other person, in all of human history, receives this much attention on his or her birthday.
Nativity scenes are displayed in communities and cities in nations around the world in December, and no other person's birth is displayed as the birth of Jesus Christ.
Christmas songs are songs about Jesus Christ, and no other person in all of human history has songs that are played and sung on his or her birthday.
What is there about this man named Jesus that is so special?
Even His birth was an event of silence---not only in all of Israel, but nations around the world did not know of His arrival. The heir to the throne of King David was born and the son of a king was not acknowledged except by a few people.
For the first two years after His birth, Jesus lived with His parents in virtual obscurity, just miles away from King Herod. Why did Herod not know this? The kings of the east knew, and they traveled hundreds miles to worship the Lord and to lay presents at His feet.
The only book that tells us about the birth and the life of Christ is the Holy Bible, and though there are people who have never read the Bible, they believe, however, that Christ was born just over two thousand years ago in the city of Bethlehem.
But how did this man named Jesus become world-famous? What is there about this man that has gained worldwide attention for more than two thousand years?
Jesus was crucified, yes, but the Romans also crucified thousands of people. But can you name another person who was crucified by the Romans? Probably not. Guilty or not, they were still people; but their names were not recorded, not considered to be important. To the Romans, the only name of importance was Caesar.
Knowing this, Pontius Pilate made sure that people would know the name of Jesus because he had a signed nailed at the top of the Lord's cross---in three languages:
JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.
No other execution was noted by Pontius Pilate, nor of the Jews who wanted Christ to die. But there was something special about this execution that Pilate wanted people to remember.
So then, who is this Jesus of Christmas?
Christ is the King of kings and Lord of lords, the root and the offspring of David, the Son of God.
Christ died on a cross, but the cross could not keep Him dead.
Christ was buried in a tomb, but the tomb could not keep Him hidden.
Christ arose from death because death was not His prison.
Christmas is special in three ways: without the birth of Christ, there would have been no crucifixion; without His crucifixion, there would have been no death; without His death, there would have been no resurrection; and without His birth, death, and resurrection, there would be no salvation. And without these three, there would be no Christmas.
Christmas, therefore, is all about Jesus Christ, the Son of God: born to die, but born to live again.
